By Bruce Dennis, President
We had 70 members and eight guests present at our regular April meeting of
Carpenters Local 247.
John Kroger, candidate for Oregon attorney general, addressed the membership
regarding his candidacy. He also took questions from the members. Mike Fahey,
Portland City Council candidate, was also present and discussed his run for the
Portland City Council. Mike is a longtime UBC member and former state
representative from North Portland. He also took members’ questions and was
warmly received by the membership. Executive-secretary Doug Tweedy was also in
attendance. His report mainly covered a five-year contract proposal from the
General and Concrete Contractors Association (GCCA). They propose $9.20 total
increase over five years. They are more open to a Health and Welfare merger than
the AGC, which has not agreed with this proposal.
There was an extended discussion about this proposal. We also had an
organizing report, steward meeting report, trade show negotiations update and a
political report. We approved several political contributions from our separate
segregated fund.
Brian Carson has been added to our trade show negotiation team, per the
request from the local.
Under “Good of the Order”, Scott Swartout (Local 2154) made an appeal to
Local 247 to form a “Relay for Life” American Cancer Society team in Yamhill
county. We also heard reports about the April 26 “Rebuilding Together with
Christmas in April” annual volunteer event. Several Local 247 members
volunteered to help with the repairs, which are to low-income and or elderly
disabled Portland area residents. Local 247 has participated in this program for
the past 15 years.
Under “New Business,” we agreed to purchase more Local 247 baseball hats, and
concurred with the Political Committee’s recommended contributions.
As per usual, this report only covers the highlights of the meeting. For more
complete info, BE THERE – 2ND TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH. |

The primary election is upon us, and it is up to you, the voters and union
members, to do your civic duty by electing candidates who will look out for the
needs of working people. We need people who will fight for getting the jobs to
contractors who have an apprenticeship program in place and provide their
workers with benefits, and not just look at the bottom line when they vote on
awarding a contract. Please study your voter’s pamphlet, review our endorsements
and make your decision. If you have any questions or comments , please call me
at 503- 730-6307.
