U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer (Democrat, Oregon’s Third District) was in attendance at our August Regular Union Meeting. He gave a short presentation about legislation in Washington, D.C., Supreme Court appointments, the war in Iraq and the development of a Democratic presidential candidate. He also thanked the Carpenters Union for supporting him as U.S. Representative. Local 247 members were then granted a question-and-answer session, which lasted about half an hour. Our members asked good questions, for the most part, and impressed the Congressman by how well informed Carpenters were on the subjects of interest for U.S. citizens.

Under Reports we heard from representatives about union job opportunities throughout the region. Our organizers reported on picket/banner events, which highlight unfair contractors. We had a Trust report regarding the recent passage of the retiree premium, which will help retirees self-pay their medical benefits after they retire. We also had reports on volunteer activities, Volunteer Organizing Committee, Oregon Legislature and the 247 picnic.

Under Good of the Order, Rudy Martinez (Local 2154) appealed to 247 regarding a fundraiser for a Leukemia/Lymphoma fighting Foundation.

Under New Business we passed a motion which provides for four members to attend Local 306’s Political Convention in Bend on Sept.17. This is not to exceed $400 total.
