The meeting was called to
order at 7:05 p.m. Bruce Dennis was excused for Council business. Several of
the other board members were excused as well. Some of them left early to
attend the Annual Delegates Meeting in Butte, Montana. There were 48 members
in attendance.
Three new members were sworn in. There was a
spirited discussion/debate on the Out-of-work List rules and/or guidelines.
Many members voiced the pros/cons of the current Out-of-work List and how
things need to be changed.
Under New Business, a motion was passed to
donate a $25 gift certificate for a skate shop in Keizer for the anniversary
of the Carlson Skateboard Park. The meeting was adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
General membership Meets the second Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Carpenters Hall, 2215
N. Lombard, Portland. Note: U.S. Congress-man Earl Blumenauer will be attending
our November meeting.
Retirees Retirees meet for lunch the second Monday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at JJ
North’s, 10520 NE Halsey, Portland.
Executive Board Executive Board meets the fourth Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at the
Carpenters Hall, 2215 N. Lombard.
The Political Committee met to review the
questionnaires from several candidates. In reviewing the completed
questionnaires, we chose the candidates to endorse that we felt would best serve
the members by being elected. Here is a list of the candidates the Local 247 has

or if anyone in your house has turned 18, they need to register to vote. It is
our patriotic duty to vote. We need to choose the candidates who share our views
on the issues of family wage jobs, right to organize, responsible bidding rules

Dues reminder
Any member who is taking advantage of reduced quarterly dues must have their
fourth-quarter dues payment into the office no later than Sept. 30, 2004. The
fourth-quarter payment will pay for your dues for the months of October,
November and December. If you are currently not taking advantage of this option
and wish to do so, please send your payment into the office before the due date.
However, you must have your dues paid through September in order to take
advantage of this discount. The reduced rates are as follows: Journeyman -
$66.00, Apprentice - $42.00, Tradeshow - $48.00.
Known
to his fellow workers as Rodeo, Raif Zwingli was an eight-year member of
Carpenters Local 247. He died at his home in Molino on July 29, 2004. Raif was
born in 1973 in Portland, Oregon, but grew up in Nampa, Idaho, where his love
for horses and the rodeo began. He moved to Las Vegas, where he graduated high
school and began a career in construction. He returned to Portland in 1993 and
progressed into concrete and formwork. Raif joined the Carpenters as a
journeyman in 1996, where he remained an active member.
Rodeo was currently working for Hoffman Structures
on the OHSU Expansion Project. His last few years have been mainly with Hoffman
Structures. Rodeo also had long-term employment with Whitaker-Ellis, Marion,
Anderson, Walsh and others. Being an energetic worker, he was willing to perform
difficult and hazardous tasks. The large number of hours worked are a testament
of his abilities.
Rodeo was an accomplished team roper, competing
across the Western States. A devoted family man, Rodeo is survived by his wife
and sons, Laurie, Tyler, Brady, a son to be born this winter, parents Walter and
Lola Zwingli, siblings, Kirk Guymon-member of Local 247, Scott Zwingli, Karrie
Guymon, Karla Davis and Terri Littlefield.
