PNWRCC Metro Wide Endorsement Committee Happy Autumn to everyone! We are
entering the political season and it is important for everyone to be aware of
what is going on in the upcoming elections. Our first election will be the
November 6th vote on the ballot measures. We will be deciding on Measure 49, and
Measure 50. Measure 49 will modify Measure 37, the property rights measure and
Measure 50 will dedicate funds to provide health care for children. Please study
your voter pamphlet and make a decision that is best for the State of Oregon and
its citizens. You must be registered to vote, so if you have moved you must
re-register. The deadline for the November election is October 16. You can
register at the elections office on SE 11 and Morrison or at your public
library. The decisions you make will affect the future of Oregon.
The following measures will appear on the November 6, 2007 Special Election:
Measure 49 -- Modifies Measure 37; Clarifies right to build homes;
Limits large developments; protects farms, forests, groundwater. Measure 50 -- Amends Constitution; Dedicates funds to provide health care
for children, fund tobacco prevention through increased tobacco tax.
John Edwards, Democratic candidate for president, addresses a rally in
Nashua, New Hampshire, Sept.8 after being endorsed by the Carpenters
Union. Standing behind Edwards (right to left) are UBC President Douglas
McCarron, UBC Eastern District Vice President Frank Spencer,New England
Regional Council of Carpenters Executive Secretary Mark Erlich, and an
unidentified carpenter.
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters have endorsed former North Carolina U.S.
senator John Edwards in the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary.
"Our endorsement is based on the Senator’s outspoken support for all of
organized labor and his focus on America’s working families," said Carpenters
President Douglas J. McCarron. The Carpenters’ early endorsement is unusual
given that the union has made no endorsement in recent presidential primaries,
and made no endorsement at all in the last presidential race.
Edwards met with the union’s executive board and 35 key leaders from
throughout the United States in Las Vegas. They voted overwhelmingly to endorse
Edwards following that meeting. "Edwards’ active and visible support for trade
unions, on picket lines and in the board rooms made him the obvious, and to our
leadership, only choice in this election," McCarron said.
"In addition to his support for labor, our leadership was particularly
impressed with the senator’s strong stand on trade," McCarron said. He added
that the union is particularly concerned about the impact of NAFTA, the World
Trade Organization and expanding trade agreements on middle class jobs in
America. "We believe that Senator Edwards truly understands the impact these
agreements have had on working Americans."
"We also believe that Senator Edwards will have a great appeal in a general
election. He has the ability to reach out to moderate voters, including the
members of our union, and to address their very real concerns about jobs, health
care and the economy," McCarron said.
