September Meeting Report

By Bruce Dennis
President

As you should know, the September regular meeting scheduled for Sept. 11 was postponed until Sept. 18 because of the terrorist attacks on New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. We sent a special notice to all members and apologize to any who came on Sept. 11 expecting a union meeting. We called all who attended the last two meetings and sent an e-mail to our 247 e-mail-listed members.

The meeting was well attended, with 82 members on hand to discuss the business of Local 247. We began the meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of all who lost their lives on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Chris and Mick Crum, with scholarship winner Emily Crum.

Jessica Wellner of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital came to the meeting and was presented with two donations checks, totaling $4,300. One was from our 247 picnic fundraiser, totaling $2,800, and the other was from the Regional Council quilt auction at our recent annual meeting, which was for $1,500. Jessica spoke about Doernbecher and thanked us for our support.

We had our regular reports from representatives, apprenticeship and training, and from Sheri Raven, Council organizer. Shari gave some service awards to Don Kern and Brian Carson for their work on the Safeway Boycott. All members who have helped on the boycott were also recognized.
Kevin Wiley, recruitment coordinator gave mentor certificates and thanked all the mentors from Local 247. Our Local has more mentors than any other local in the regional council.

Dave Wilkinson was presented a Carhartt jacket steward award for his service as a union steward.
Emily Crum, scholarship winner, was also in attendance, with her parents Mick and Chris Crum. Emily spoke briefly thanking the local for its support.

We passed the hat for two 247 members recently hurt in auto accidents; $780 was collected. Under New Business, a motion was made to match the contribution and forward it to Ernie Morse and Dick Boak, the members who were hurt. As of meeting time, Dick was in critical condition at OHSU. Please keep Dick and his family in your prayers.

Another motion was made to send $2,247 to the families of the members who are missing as a result of the terrorist attack at The World Trade Center.

There was quite a bit more discussion and comment about world events and more. For more complete information, please contact me or … ATTEND YOUR MEETINGS.

Pride

By Bruce Ashback
Business Representative/Trustee

This country just suffered a great tragedy with the Attacks in New York and Washington D.C. A terrible death toll shatters thousands of dreams. However, we will survive, this is the greatest country in the world. This Local mirrors that thought. Anybody can claim to be the best, however, we don’t just talk, we lead. A Union card was required to work as a volunteer in New York City. Take Pride in your card. Take Pride in your Local. This Local contributes heavily everyday whether it be money or action. We always help our own Brothers and Sisters and our community. I am constantly asked how we do it. I just answer Pride and teamwork. At this time, I would personally like to thank all the Brothers and Sisters for their volunteer time, be it in mentoring, various committees, Christmas in April, just to name a few. For anybody who volunteers we take Pride in your efforts for this Local. Contact Dawn or Megan, prior to our next meeting, for a special Blue ticket for a drawing in January.

247 gets front page
We sent out a press release regarding our picnic fundraiser for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Lee Scopal of the Daily Journal of Commerce called and subsequently wrote a very nice FRONT PAGE article for The Daily Journal of Commerce. The article ran Sept. 10, 2001 and is available at the 247 office.

Terror attack hits Carpenters

As of Tuesday, Sept. 17, the death of one UBC member had been confirmed in the terrorist attack and the New York City Council of Carpenters listed some 15 not accounted for from among the several hundred members from the metropolitan area who were working in the World Trade Center at the time.

Carpenter Daniel J. Rosetti, 32, of Bloomfield N.J., joined Local 15 just last May. He was handling furniture for Certified Movers, who confirmed his death to the Northern New Jersey Council of Carpenters.

As recovery work continues, hundreds of carpenters are among the thousands currently assisting at the scene, many in “bucket brigades” that are painstakingly removing rubble as rescuers comb the wreckage. Card-carrying members of building trades unions are the only non-uniformed workers allowed at the disaster site.

At this time the New York City District Council is still working to contact all missing individuals. With well over 100 contractors regularly employing UBC members at the Center’s seven massive buildings, the NYC Council is continuing the difficult work of verifying the names and whereabouts of all members who were actually onset during the attack, and is coordinating their information with nearby Councils in the UBC’s Eastern Region.

Fortunately, it appears that no UBC members were lost at the Pentagon – where renovation on the damaged sections had only recently ended.

The General Office will continue to update this page as facts become available. As soon as arrangements are clear, we will provide details on how UBC families can offer support to our members in the New York City area.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those touched by this terrible event.

Local nets $2,800 for Doernbecher

Carpenters Local 247’s annual picnic raised $2,800 for Portland’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The picnic was held Sunday, Aug. 19, at Blue Lake Park in Troutdale. This donation coupled with donations from the last several years puts Local 247 at over $18,000 raised for Doernbecher.

“Our contractors, vendors, neighborhood businesses, other labor organizations and members all contribute and embrace this very worthy fundraising event” said President Bruce Dennis.

“We have set our goal at $100,000 and we have an enthusiastic, diverse group of contractors, businesses and individuals that make the goal attainable. Without their support, this fundraiser would not be possible,” Dennis said.
