Carpenters Local 247 October 2006 Meeting Report

By Bruce Dennis
President

We had 73 members present at our October Special Called Union meeting. We had Kevin Gale from School District #1, Portland to explain Ballot Measure 26-84. Discussion and questions followed.

Under New Business, members narrowly endorsed the ballot measure. We also had Jay Breslow from the Portland School SUN program requesting support for their fundraising concert program. Twenty-one new members were accepted; six were in attendance. The Special Called meeting was to discuss and vote on some amendments to our bylaws. The amendments involved our Sick and Injured Fund guidelines, officer stipends and delegate expense rules. The amendments passed 47 to 11.

Under Reports, we heard from Ben Embree, regional director, about various picket activities and actions in the downtown core area. We got a comprehensive political report from chairman Joe Baron. He reported on all Metro endorsements. Business Representatives reported on job starts and political activities. Regional Manager Pete Savage reported on organizing, negotiations, PDC and the new Council office.

Under Good of the Order, we heard from 247 member Gary Zinn, requesting help to go on a rebuilding mission to Biloxi, Mississippi, to help Hurricane Katrina victims. We also discussed immigration, Girl Fest and politics.

Under New Business, we agreed to match a collection for Luis Mendoza, endorse a “No Vote” on the Peru Free Trade Agreement, supply 247 t-shirts to Girl Fest volunteers and to donate $247 to the Katrina volunteer trip. We also were encouraged to help on the SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) concert program. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. For more complete information, attend your union meeting.

Musical comedy comes to Carpenters hall

Local 247’s September general membership meeting was opened with arousing rendition of “Mother Jones” preformed by the amazingly energetic and talented songstress Melinda E. Pittman. Melinda is the creative whirlwind behind Broadarts Productions. Melinda was a recipient of a Portland Vision Grant. On July 29, the Broadarts Company of players brought their performance of “If I Were Queen of the Forest” to nearly 100 Portlanders in Carpenters Local 247’s hall. This free musical comedy production brought performers and audience together to discuss their vision of the perfect Portland of the future. You can look forward to more evenings of comedy and song from this troop of Labor’s finest troubadours in the 247 Hall, located at 2215 N. Lombard in Portland. For more information about BroadArts and upcoming performances go to http://www.broadarts.org .

Vote!

The time has come to let your voice be heard! The deadline to vote is Nov. 7. The most important race is for governor. Ted Kulongoski has been a friend of labor, has brought business and funding into the state, which ultimately has kept us working, and he understands the issues that we deal with everyday. Please make sure that you take time to elect the candidates that will keep the economy expanding, who care about our right to organize, and who understand labor’s issues. We need to ensure that our financial future and our concerns are heard. We can do this by re-electing Ted Kulongoski for our governor.

Girl Fest 2006

Saturday, September 30, the Portland Expo Center was the setting of Girl Fest 2006. This Girl Scout event showcased all that the Girls of the 21st Century can be. This year’s event was attended by over 8,000 Girl Scouts, their mothers, fathers, troop leaders, sisters and brothers, and it had 100 booths.

Carpenters Local 247’s own Wendy Holmes stepped up to the plate to recruit donors and volunteers to represent the Carpenters in the Oregon Tradeswomen’s booth. The scouts and their guests were treated to a variety of construction related activities. There were electrical switches to wire. PVC pipe was cut, decorated and turned into fashion bracelets. Holes were drilled for draw pulls to be attached. Participants waited patiently to guess the number of screws in the jar for the opportunity to win a 247 T-shirt or hard hat. All winners and losers received a carpenter pencil and union sticker.

We’d like to acknowledge all the hard work of Wendy and her crew: Cheryl Sawyer Alvarado, Jen Underhill, Kris Rieck, Megan and Christie Kern. Thank you to Connie Ashbrook and the board of OTN for coordinating all the trades’ participation.
