April 2003 meeting report

By Bruce Dennis
President

April’s meeting went smoothly and was informative for the 54 members who were in attendance.

Under reports we heard from Rep. Dave Oury that the Laborers were pursuing DWA as a trade show contractor. Pete Savage, 247’s financial secretary, was introduced as a new representative for the Council. Pete reported that he will be working with the organizers in an effort to convert Downtown Tenant improvement work to Union work. We had general work reports from several other representatives. Joe Baron gave a report on legislative bills that will have an effect on the working class. Pete Savage reported that he would seek the vacated position on the Regional Council Executive Board.

We had discussions about the upcoming May Day march, X-mas in April volunteer event, picnic plans, and our fundraising raffle.

Under new business, two motions were passed, one to display framed pictures of our Executive Board in the office and one offering an endorsement of Pete’s candidacy for the Regional Council Executive Board opening.

The meeting adjourned early at 8:45 p.m., and we drew tickets for a variety of door prizes. Be there next month! May’s meeting is special call for the purpose of nominations for one trustee and one Regional Council delegate.

Carpenters union/GCCA partnership

Our Master Labor Agreement has long referred to a Labor/Management Committee to look at ways to improve our relationship. Until recently, that committee only convened when we had a grievance hearing or an expiring contract. We have committed to regular meetings with the General and Concrete Contractors Association (GCCA) in an effort to become better partners in the construction industry. We have already agreed on a contract modification, which clarifies travel pay language. When a contractor specifically transfers a carpenter or foreman out of their home area, they will be entitled to travel pay from their home city.

There are many possible issues to discuss and resolve through this forum. Other topics recently brought up include sub-contracting, downtown parking, strategies regarding non-union contractors and problems bidding in rural or non-metro areas. We have agreed on a partnership logo and have purchased some banners and signs.
Any input from Union members is welcome. If you have ideas, contact your representative or the local office.

This is available as a sticker to put on your hard hat or wherever. Ask at the Union office.
