We
had 70 members present at out February regular meeting of Carpenters Local 247.
We had a report from our Metro Political Committee. They have been interviewing
candidates for a variety of upcoming elections. Several endorsements have been
recommended by the committee.
We also had a Northwest Oregon Labor Council report. The Madison neighborhood
association appreciated the help the council provided in stopping a suspected
WalMart project on NE 82nd Ave. The Working Families Party and fusion voting has
also been recently discussed at the Labor Council meetings.
Our financial report was sliding into the red for the month. The report was
explained and accepted by the members.
Under “Good of the Order,” we got reports on “Cross Trade Solidarity,” the
failure of NAFTA, political races and job site harmony, or lack thereof. We also
got a report about Retiree Meryl Ehlingers’ recent volunteer efforts at
Roosevelt High School’s Drama Department. He helped students with construction
of sets for their upcoming play.
Under “New Business,” a motion was passed to allow AFLAC to mail out to our
members. We also agreed to discontinue Bright Now mailings.
We concurred with the Metro Political recommendations, which include an
endorsement of Local 1273 (Eugene) member Paul Holvey for Oregon House of
Representatives. We also passed a motion to advertise at the Columbia River High
School baseball stadium. This was referred to our Trustees.
The meeting was generally smooth, but this report only highlights the actions
taken. For a more complete story … attend your union meetings.
