We had 85 members present at our regular May meeting of Carpenters Local 247.
It was a special called meeting for the purpose of nominating officers and
delegates. Nominations were as follows. President, Bruce Dennis and Jason
Sheckler; Vice President, Mike Anderson and John Hahn; Financial Secretary, Joe
Baron and Dave Oury; Treasurer, Darell Duffy; Recording Secretary, Ben Basom and
Tom Sowa; Warden, Mike Couch; Conductor, Pete Savage; Trustee, Kevin Stokes.
Under Reports we heard from John Steffens, Director Willamette Carpenters
Training Center. He reported on Skill Advancement, Phase III of remodel, and The
History Channel visit to the center to do a TV spot on tools. Ben Basom reported
on organizing activities and job actions. Pete Savage gave a report on contract
negotiations, GCCA, AGC and Trade Show. GCCA agreement passed strongly. AGC and
Trade Show: Still talking, no agreement yet. Women in Trades conference was well
attended by Local 247 members. We had a political report from Joe Baron and a
Local 247 volunteer report from myself. Rebuilding Together with X-mas in April
was thankful to have 14 members from the Carpenters union helping on several
house repairs this season. Our financial report was positive for the last month
in both the General and Building fund.
Under “Good of the Order,” the recent contract proposal was discussed by
several members. We also discussed union solidarity with other crafts, and
several members made remarks regarding the upcoming Local 247 election. We also
had further reports on the Sisters conference, stewards and future contract
improvements.
We adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
For more complete coverage, attend your meetings. Next month is a Special
Call meeting to elect officers and delegates. Be there!

Local 247 members have done some outstanding service, helping those in need
in our neighborhoods. The recent “Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April”
event held Saturday, April 26, was a big success. At least 14 Carpenters union
volunteers worked on six sponsored houses. Union contractors Turner and Howard
S. Wright also sponsored houses and had union volunteers. The “Rebuilding
Together” effort is a nationwide group dedicated to helping elderly, disabled or
low-income people with repairs on their homes. The Roosevelt High School Drama
program recently asked for some help building sets for their play. Retiree Merle
Ehlinger volunteered, and his work was very helpful to the students, who also
helped on the set construction. Other members volunteering recently include John
Jackson, Bruce Dennis, John Hahn, Mike Couch, Stan Joseph, Joe Baron, Chris
Larson, Larry Michaels, Tom Sowa, Ray Grahn, Aaron Thorpe, Ralph Miller, and Mic
Crum. Many of these members have helped every year. Thank you to all. You help
to cast a positive image of the Carpenters Union.
