May Day March By Joe Baron, Local 247 Trustee & Delegate
When the first meetings of the May Day Coalition were held, the mood was that of
uncertainty, apprehension, confusion and sometimes, chaos. For over eight weeks,
meetings were held, calls were made and a strong, dedicated coalition was formed
to work toward having a peaceful, successful May Day march. Unlike May Day
marches of the past, we wanted to return to a labor-centered agenda, which
celebrates all the advancements the labor movement has given us.
We also wanted to educate the public about the
sacrifices many have made to bring them what is taken for granted every day.
Through hard work, dedication and many hours of our time we managed to show the
public and the media that a gathering of the people for a peaceful assembly is
not an impossible task. In the darkness of uncertainty, the Carpenters were the
lantern bearers.
I would personally like to thank the staff,
officers and members of Local 247 and the members of the other Locals who made
this a day that all labor organizations should be very proud of. Our message was
heard loud and clear. A special thanks also goes out to the Council staff
members, Jerry Auvil and Ben Embree, who made this event so successful.
We started like a small child taking their first
steps and now that we’ve learned to walk … let’s make next year’s May Day march
a charge to the finish line!!
Come one, come all to the Local 247 second annual
golf tournament. It will be held at Colwood National Golf Club again this year
and it will be a four-person scramble with a blind draw … but that’s were the
similarity ends.
This year’s tournament will feature 10 chances to win prizes ranging from a
custom putter to coupons for dinners and a $1,000,000 hole in one. Some of the
others will be Longest-drive Holes, K.P. Holes, Shortest Drive, Putting Contest,
Shortest Missed Putt, Hit the Green, Hit the Fairway, a Quarter-drop Contest. In
addition, someone on the winning team will receive a four-day and three-night
trip to Las Vegas!
The “Bud Girls” will run all contests.
Don’t forget the top four golfers from Local 247
will represent us at the Regional Council Tournament on July 25 at Quail Valley
Golf Course in Banks, compliments of Local 247.
