June meeting report

By Bruce Dennis
President

We had 112 members present at our June regular meeting. The meeting was preceded by a contract ratification vote from 4 to 7 p.m. Local 247 rejected the contract proposal 111 to 64. At the regular meeting we had elections of the Recording Secretary, Treasurer and Pacific NW Council Delegates. Steve Wright was re-elected as Recording Secretary; Bruce Ashback was elected Treasurer; and the following 11 were elected as Delegates: Willie Gore, Pete Savage, Eldon Middleton, Gene Lawhorn, Shaun Cushman, Steve Wright, Joe Baron, John Hahn, Kevin Stokes, Darrel Duffy and Joe Whitney. Bruce Dennis and Chet Caruthers are also delegates by virtue of their positions on the PNW Executive Board.

We had reports from our retirees, training center, business reps, political committee, 247 golf tournament and our picnic committee.

Under new business we endorsed the campaign of Randy Leonard for Portland City Commissioner and agreed to a $2500 donation; donated $247 to the Breast Cancer Walk sponsored by Christie Kern; and donated $247 to Benson High School to help pay expenses to attend a national construction contest. We also had two motions regarding procedures for voting on contracts. The meeting generally went smoothly and adjourned at 10:02 p.m.

AFL-CIO calls for demand that Labor Ready board step down

The AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department is urging Labor Ready shareholders to demand that the blue-collar temporary employment firm's top management step down after revelations contained in a report the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a letter to shareholders, BCTD President Edward C. Sullivan said the firm's 8-k report filed with the SEC "acknowledges virtually every concern we have raised" about Labor Ready's "high injury rate and terrible wages, improper deductions [and] workers' comp irregularities, including large-scale misclassification, fund under-reserves, questionable accounting and reporting and misconduct by its executives."

Thank you!

Local 247 would like to thank the 176 members who found the time to vote on the new contract. We’d also like to thank the 18 percent of carpenters who voted council wide.

Fraternally,

Joe Baron
