Seventy-one
members and guests were in attendance at our December regular meeting of
Carpenters Local 247. Cathy Wiese, director of “My Fathers House,” was a
guest speaker, telling us of their mission to help homeless families and
about their ongoing construction project. She is appealing to the Carpenters
Union for some volunteer help. Barry White, Millwright Rep/Organizer was
also present to garner support for a natural gas project on the lower
Columbia River. We had Apprenticeship and Training reports from John
Schraner, Jim Murphy and Skill Advancement Coordinator Jim Vargo. We also
had local representative and organizer reports.
Organizers have been working on the WTO rally, Benson Tower picketing and
worker food drives, as well as raising awareness about non-union
subcontractors downtown. Work situation remains good, considering it’s
wintertime. There are still dispatches and new jobs starting. Dispatch rule
changes will go into effect March 1 [See below right]. Local 247 was thanked
for its diligence advocating the changes. We had a Jobs with Justice report
from Jered Fisher. The “Grinch” Party was scheduled for Dec.16. Our
financial report was positive and well received by the members. Haloti
Poulivaati was present to receive his Journeyman certificate.
Under Good of the Order, we had a wide range of comments calling for
local unity, honesty, OWL adjustments, and other subjects. Under New
Business we agreed to send a letter of support regarding the natural gas
project. We also agreed to send a letter to the president of Iran regarding
the right to organize. We raffled off Christmas hams and several other door
prizes. For more complete information … ATTEND your Union meetings.

The
Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters toy drive was a huge success!!
All of the locals combined were able to contribute $4,200 in monetary donations,
993 toys were donated to the Toy & Joy Makers in the Metro area and 404 gifts
were donated to outlining areas and other agencies! WOW!
We would like to thank all of those members who helped us reached this goal.
We know that these contributions were appreciated by many and helped many
families have a merrier Christmas!
From all of us here at Local 247, we would like to wish everyone a happy,
safe and abundant New Year! We hope you had a great holiday and wish you a very
prosperous 2006!
