We had 60 members present at our July regular meeting of Carpenters Local
247. Jamie Partridge, union postal worker, was a special guest, giving us a
presentation regarding working conditions in Venezuela. Jobs with Justice (JwJ)
and the Cross Borders Organizing Committee (RBLOC) are networking with
workers in Venezuela and sponsoring a trip there as well. The presentation
was well received by 247 members.
We had three new members at the meeting and we installed all the recently
elected Delegates and Officers as well.
Under Reports of Accidents, Sickness, and Deaths we heard about the recent
passing of WCTC instructor Jerry Pankow. Several 247 members attended the
memorial service. Under Reports we heard about the High School Construction
Camp program where High School Juniors get some construction training and
jobsite experience. Our Endorsement Committee reported and has recommended
several political endorsements, which were approved by the members. Our
Organizers reported on the Downtown and Trade Show activities which are
ongoing. Business Reps reported on various job starts. This is a good season
for construction work in the area. There will be a Steward training class
offered in August. Regional Manager, Pete Savage, reported on South
Waterfront projects, subcontracting, trust fund issues, new office building
and WCTC training director search.
Under Good of the Order we had a picnic report (August 13), Food Bank
volunteer request, US product endorsement, and an announcement of a free
play to be performed at 247 on July 29. Nicole Crain was in attendance
requesting Habitat for Humanity assistance.
Under New Business we discussed Ballot Committee issues. Our Ballot
Committee, at the request of a candidate, re-tallied the ballots from last
month<92>s election. If we ever re-tally again, all candidates will be
notified. We agreed to purchase Labor History Calendars for the membership.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. As per usual, for more complete information <85> attend your union meetings.
Hopefully, you know we have State and initiative elections coming up in
November. In order for us to advance our causes and get people elected who will
work for our jobs (by getting money for new bridges, roads, infrastructure,
etc.), we all need to be registered to vote. Please make sure that you and any
eligible family members are registered to vote. If you have moved, you will need
to complete a new registration form. Please contact the office and we will
gladly mail the forms to you.

50-year member Merle Ehlinger shows school children basic Carpenter skills
every summer at Holy Redeemer<92>s two-week vacation session. For the last three
years Merle has fascinated kids by helping them plane, shave, cut, and drill
holes with various hand tools. Merle provides a nice selection of wood planes,
hand saws, draw knives, and boring bits to demonstrate our woodworking skills.
One of their favorites, according to Merle, is to write the child<92>s name on the
edge of a board and then help them plane off a curly shaving which bears their
name. "Kids will carry that curly shaving around all day, even wear it around
their necks" says Merle. It<92>s obvious that Merle enjoys this role and we commend
him for showing the children a little bit about our Trade. Thanks, Merle!
