July meeting report

By Pete Savage
Financial Secretary

Local 247 members John Jackson (left) and Ray Grahn with new Carhartt jackets.

We had 112 members present at our July regular meeting. We began the meeting with a special guest speaker, State Representative Diane Rosenbaum. She discussed her initiative to raise the minimum wage and asked for our help with the campaign.

We had reports from our Retirees, Training Center, business representatives, Political Committee and our Jobs with Justice representative.

Vice President Willie Gore gave us the results of the Golf Tournament and reported the outcome of the Picnic Committee meeting.

John Jackson and Ray Grahn were presented with Local 247 Carhartt jackets for all their hard work and involvement with the Christmas in April project.

Several motions were made which included sending four members to the AFL-CIO Summer School, making a donation to the charity auction at the next Quarterly Delegate Meeting, sending four Local 247 members to play at the Regional Council Golf Tournament, and sending a letter to the Portland School Board asking the school board members who voted to fire the custodians to resign from their positions.

All in all, the meeting went very well and was adjourned at 9:34 p.m.

Help wanted: raffle ticket sellers
By Pete Savage, Financial Secretary

I reported at the last meeting that the ticket sales for the Harley are sluggish. With the downturn in the economy and the resulting loss of construction jobs this is somewhat understandable. But with 800 tickets left to sell in the remaining five weeks, we are at the breaking point of profit for our members. If 24 people can step up and sell one book of 20 tickets each, we can put about $16,000 in our new sick and injured fund, or we can wait for someone else to do it and it won't get done. Any amount you can sell will be of great help. Also remember $5,000 is going to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and the rest to 247 members. This is a benefit no other local in Oregon offers but will not happen without your help. We build stick-by-stick and nail-by-nail … this is the same thing. Let us not be intimidated by the volume left to sell or the deadline. We are all about making tough schedules and building what others say can't be done.

Dear members,

Hopefully you know we have state and initiave elections coming up in November. In order for us to advance our causes and get people elected who will work for our jobs (by getting money for new bridges, roads, infrastructure, etc.), we all need to be registered to vote. If you or any eligible member of your family (18 years old ) are not registered to vote, please contact Local 247 or your local voting office for a voter registration form.

Fraternally,
Joe Baron
